I am such a firm believer in the power of essential oils, and I have dedicated much information on this site to essential oils. But, then I realized many people may not realize what essential oils are! Here is a brief primer on essential oils.
Essential oils are aromatic compounds that are found in plants. They are not visible with the naked eye, and not all plants produce essential oils. There are approximately 3000 identified essential oils and many of these are beneficial to humans for our health and well being. Essential oils may be extracted from the roots, flowers, seeds, and bark of the plant. They are highly concentrated, which makes them extremely potent. The plant produces these aromatic compounds to give it its aroma, protect it from environmental conditions, repel insects, and may play a part in pollination.
Someone once told me, “Plants can’t run, they need help!” and that is a key role essential oils play, protecting the plant.
Historically plants have played a large part in medicinal practices, dating back to ancient times. Everyone has heard that the baby Jesus was brought Frankincense and Myrrh. However, these would not have been essential oils, but in resin form from the trees. Still effective for heath, but not nearly as strong as the oils we have today. The process of distilling essential oils from plants did not occur until later, approximately 700AD. We now distill the aromatic compounds from the resins to produce extremely potent essential oils of Frankincense and Myrrh. Other plants may have the oils distilled from their leaves, stems, roots, bark, seeds, or flowers.
Each oil has its own specific beneficial qualities that assist the body in healing itself of different conditions. One point to remember is that only the body can heal, essential oils work to give the body a leg up!*
